"Things That Make Playa Festivals Worth It"

These are quotes from 5th graders overhead by Joseph Whitehead, (NRCS Clovis, NM) during a recent Playa Festival he presented at:
· “This place is so cool!”
· “I found a new discovery!”
· “Black Grandma, Blue Grandma, and Sideoats Grandma?”

This was sent in by Betty Williamson of Dora, NM:
A teacher asked a student, "Okay Miss Wealth of Information, how can you tell when it's a playa and not a low spot?" The student answered, telling the teacher the things she knew about playas. The teacher said, "I think I have one. I always thought it was just a low spot."

Playas Are Important

The ecological keystone of our region's water cycle are an estimated 30,000 playa basins. We may not have rivers, but the Southern High Plains has more playas than anywhere in the world. Playas are often dry, which is normal and natural, but when filled with water after heavy rains, playas become supercharged oases of life.
Though ignored and neglected, playas are among the most important and most endangered wetlands in North America. Playas also provide the main recharge to the Ogallala Aquifer, and are vital to local ecosystems and economics.

2010 Playa Festivals

September and October 2010 have been a busy time for Ogallala Commons staff and the wonderful folks that help us put on Playa Festivals. This fall we have many Playa Festivals scheduled, making for 7 weeks of full calenders and hundreds of miles logged criss-crossing the Southern High Plains. The following schools have had or are scheduled to participate in a Playa Festival this fall:
